Principal Director
Nicholas has over twenty-five years’ experience leading and designing projects across a range of sectors, including public buildings, higher education, residential and conservation. He is recognised as a thought leader in the design of teaching and learning environments, having delivered numerous large new build and complex refurbishment projects for universities throughout the UK.
With a deep interest in the architecture of all eras - Nicholas has continued to lead the practice in a way that embraces working with buildings of heritage and has developed a sophisticated approach to conservation architecture. He has led projects that aim to reconcile the importance of heritage assets with contemporary use and practice. His work embraces innovation; he has won numerous RIBA Awards, sustainability awards and product design awards for public projects.
Following an education in architecture at the University of Bath, he gained extensive experience at Richard Rogers, SOM, ORMS, before founding Nicholas Burwell Architects in 1999. He has built the practice on the principles of approaching each project with an open mind, and appetite for complex problem solving and the importance of understanding the impact of change in the way people use the spaces in which they live, learn and work.
