Team Burwell’s Energy Savings and Carbon Offset Achievements in 2024

We’re proud to share some fantastic news about our sustainability efforts at Burwell Architects! Thanks to the collective efforts of our team, we’ve made significant strides in reducing our environmental impact in 2024.

Energy Savings

This year, we saved 5,000 kWh of electricity compared to 2023—an impressive 11% reduction! This achievement is a testament to everyone’s commitment to being mindful of energy use. Remember, small actions like switching off computers when not in use can make a big difference. Keep up the great work!

Carbon Offset Initiatives

As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we continue to participate in the Carbon Footprint Offset Initiative. In 2024, we offset 12 tons of CO2, equivalent to the carbon footprint of our business operations. This year, our contribution supported the Zambia Clean Water Project, a Green Initiative that provides clean water access to communities in need.

About the Zambia Clean Water Project

Access to safe water remains a critical challenge in rural Zambia, where less than 50% of the population has reliable access to clean water. Many communities rely on unsafe sources like hand-dug wells or streams, leading to severe health impacts, including waterborne diseases, which are the third highest cause of death and disability in the country.

Additionally, nearly 90% of the rural population relies on wood as their primary energy source. For those who must boil water for purification, this contributes to hazardous household air pollution and carbon emissions.

The Zambia Clean Water Project addresses these challenges by:

  • Rehabilitating and maintaining borehole handpumps to provide reliable access to clean groundwater.
  • Training communities on best practices for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
  • Building local capacity to manage and maintain water sources for the long term.

This initiative not only improves health and quality of life but also reduces carbon emissions by decreasing reliance on wood for boiling water.
