A perfectly formed, small landmark housing project in central Chalk Farm for Vabel
The redevelopment of three Georgian townhouses elevated this corner site from a nondescript structure fronted by lacklustre carparking and bin storage to one with character and a strong street presence. The white brick facade creates a clean, crisp addition to the street without being monolithic. Deep reveals and large windows punctuate the elevation, allowing abundant natural light internally while preventing the building mass from being monolithic externally.
The project incorporates a large retail unit at ground floor with duplex and single level residential units above, all benefitting from dual or triple aspect views thanks to the site's end of terrace location and the cleverly moulded facade. Through pushing, cutting and insetting of the building volume, space is created for private and shared terraces, generating precious outdoor amenity in the city. These sculptural elements give articulation and prominence to the end of terrace site. For this project, Burwell Architects provided detailed design and delivery services.
