Innovative facility creates new centre for biological research
Burwell Architects were appointed by UCL to design a state-of-the-art flexible laboratory space for the Head of Research Department (HoRD) in Cell and Developmental Biology. The first facility of its kind in London, the facility will support the research of four independent groups across a range of biological disciplines.
The new laboratory will assist in the recruitment of internationally competitive labs in the area of metabolic/mitochondrial research.
The refurbished layout provides open plan PhD and Postdoc office space alongside the Main Molecular Laboratory. Informed by the rhythm of the existing windows, the design incorporates maximum natural daylighting with adjacencies which facilitate minimal circulation and maximum integration between workspaces.
The project embedded sustainability improvements as per UCL's Environmental Sustainability Policy, including specification of BREEAM Green Guide 'A' rated materials, intelligent design which maximised the use of natural lighting and ventilation and effective water management systems.
